Windows Updates and other maintenance tasks

I got a call from a friend over the weekend and was asked why he always has to run Windows Updates.  I told him to think of a computer as though it is a car.  A car needs tuning once in a while and a computer is no different.

As in any type of machinery, a computer requires maintenance to keep it running in top form.  And, software updates is only a part of that.  Removal of unused files, running disk defragmentation, scanning for spyware and viruses are some of the other maintenance duties of being a computer user.  Here’s a link on how to update your  Windows operating system.

A gentleman I met twenty years ago  put it best.  He had spent over 30 years in the auto industry; and, made a comparison between the personal computer and the automobile that I think made real sense…

When automobiles first became mass produced in the late 1800’s, drivers were constantly getting out of their cars and cranking the engine to get it started.  Only after many years did manufacturers work out some of these problems and today we have cars that are flawless (almost).  “Remember”, he said, “the PC has only been around since the 1970’s.  It will take awhile before they work out the bugs and stop having to reboot them all the time.”

Wireless Networking

I get asked about putting together a wireless home network all the time.  Sometimes, it even confuses me as new technologies come out so fast and each new set of features are more convoluted than the last.  Mixed that together with the manufacturers’ marketing ploy and it becomes almost impossible to dig through the rhetoric and get to the facts of the matter.

Currently, 802.11n is the industry standard.  802.11n is backwards compatible; so any device using the old standards will work with it.

What about feature enhancements that manufacturers claim as being better than their competition thus making their products faster?  Take a look at this article to get the facts about wireless…

Green Computing

In the next two years, the Obama administration is planning to spend half a trillion dollars on green technology.  The spending will come in the form of tax rebates and an array of green projects, such as renewable energy plants and installing smart energy meters that will advise consumers to use energy during off-peak hours to save on energy costs.

The push for green technology is also gaining momentum in our industry.  Green Computing has become a buzz word many in the IT industry are taking notice.

Apple just released a line of “green” computers…http://www.apple.com/mac/green-notebooks/
