Is it time you redesigned your company website?

Friday, June 24th, 2011

By now, we’ve come to know how the economy can affect almost everything, including websites.

When times are tough, updating your website is the last thing on your mind what with the lack of budget or other things that are more important on your plate. Even when it’s going well, you have little reason to update your site. Although this may be how you are feeling, good times or bad, you now have a website that badly needs a makeover.

Why the makeover, you ask? According to a recent Globe and Mail article, more and more people are turning to the web to find info on products and services and unless you have a good website, we doubt if you will be able to sell well. Plus, social media is exploding and if you don’t take advantage of it, you are going to miss out on a lot of traffic generating to your website.

So, don’t you think it’s time for giving your tired looking website a fresh new coat of paint? Here are a few rules to consider while redesigning your website:

  1. When looking for a web designer, go through several of them. Review their portfolios and find out if their work and style are in tune with your vision. If not, you should move on. Zero in on a designer whose work you find appealing, meet up with him and discuss the work and the processes used. Don’t hesitate to ask for references to get more information and insight about how other projects happened.
  2. Before giving wheels to your web design project, select several websites that you want your website to look like or have the features that you want your website to have. Also, ask the designer to take his pick. This will give you more insight into his taste.
  3. Have a structured process that sets off with an initial meeting followed by a brainstorming/information session. Follow it up with wireframes and mockups before you get to actually creating the design. You can always make changes later on.
  4. If you don’t like the direction your project is heading in, speak up. It’s your website and you want it to look good, don’t you?
  5. Establish a budget before you start and let the designer know about it.

But did you know? Your innocent desire to multitask could bring about serious and unforeseen security, privacy and legal issues! By taking your beloved multi-tasking device to work, you would not only be attracting danger to yourself, you would also be putting your entire company is danger! This might be a bitter pill to swallow but no matter how sad it may be, it is true.

Now you might be thinking, what could your innocent mobile device possibly do to bring about such catastrophic events? After all, you were only trying to be more productive with some (or a lot of) help from your device. The fact is that your personal device does impose threats. The most obvious risk is that your smartphone, tablets and e-readers containing work-related materials could easily get lost. This could put you in a difficult situation as you would not only lose your personal information but also put precious work related info into the wrong hands.

In addition to this, mobile devices are outselling desktop computers. While this is not bad news for us, it could put us mobile device users under serious threat. Cyber thieves who have had much success with hacks and scams on desktops and laptops are definitely not going to let this opportunity go. The number of users of mobile devices is increasing and so is the problem of malware on this new platform.

Likewise, cyber thieves are also likely to steal information off mobile memory cards and run networks of corrupted computers from mobile devices. Now, would it be good if your mobile device became the victim? And wait! There is more coming…Tainted apps are increasing and some of them have even surfaced in the Android Market. What about location tracking? Don’t you think this could introduce unprecedented privacy and legal concerns?
