Google Entering The Movie Business In Canada

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Just one day after Blockbuster Canada announced the closing of its remaining movie rental outlets; Google has announced the launch of an online movie service called YouTube Movies in Canada. This move by Google puts the internet giant in a situation equivalent to what one would call locking horns with Netflix, which offers Canadians unlimited access to thousands of movies and TV shows, just for $8 a month!

Launched in the US earlier this year, YouTube Movies allows users to rent new and classic movies for about $3.99 or $4.99. If you’re thinking of subscribing, you should know that you’ll have 30 days from the moment you rent a movie to begin watching it and once you begin watching it, you’ll have to finish it in 48 hours.

Don’t worry; the Canadian version of YouTube Movies will offer many more Canadian productions than its US counterpart. We are sure it doesn’t want the CRTC breathing down its neck for not including enough Canadian content! We’ve also come to know that Google has established partnerships with several distribution companies such as Alliance Films; that will definitely make them stand out.

Canadians Send 200M Text Messages Each Day

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Texting is probably the most common method people use for instant communication. And why wouldn’t they use it? With virtually all new plans coming up with unlimited texting, we doubt if there is anyone who can keep his hands off of his phone. So, how many times do you text in a day? How many text messages do you think are sent in Canada each day?

According to some statistics released by Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), it’s over a whopping 200 million!

In 2009 Canadians sent 35 billion messages. The number grew to more than 56 billion text messages in 2010 – a 60% increase. And Canadians have sent 18 billion text messages in the first quarter of 2011 alone, a 10% growth from the fourth quarter of 2010! By the looks of it, the number of text messages sent this year will go well over 70 billion (or even 80 billion?)!

calgary.ca launched. Canada’s first search based government site

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Citizens of The City of Calgary now have their own search based website to turn to if they need to find information and services quickly and easily.

calgary.ca, a site which uses Microsoft SharePoint and Google search technology, has been officially launched after it received positive feedback from Calgarians after a public preview from August 8 to 12. Few problems were reported and positive comments on social media were reasons good enough for The City of Calgary to believe that they were on the right track with the website.

The site, which came into being in 2002, was originally developed to meet the growing demand of citizens requesting civic information online. Last year, the website reached over 9 million visitors. And after almost a decade of its inception, the site has come forth, all revamped in such a way that citizens and customers can find what they are looking for easily.

The City of Calgary hired Infusion Development through a competitive bidding process to complete development work on the website. Infusion Development not only created custom feed-engine to enable smart searching, it also built an extensive mapping suite, a completely optimized mobile experience, and online forms, thus bringing forth a revolutionary way for the community to communicate with the government.

The launch of the revamped site shows how eGovernment is now a possibility. With more services and information online, future advances in technology, better services and communication with Calgarians are on the cards for The City of Calgary for sure.
